Adding a telephone service in Microsoft Response Point

By Harrybbb • on March 24, 2009

Hiya folks – Harryb here – the author of the Microsoft Response Point Primer book. I often hold a virtual book reading by posting up a passage from my smashingly fun book on Microsoft Response Point (that I like to call RP!). So let’s rock!

Adding Phone Service

The third task area is Phone Service and this is very important. It is here you will bring it all together by configuring the telephone service to interact with Response Point and allow users to communicate with the real world. We will add both analog and VoIP services to the same base unit (such a configuration is common).

A few baseline comments are needed before proceeding. Need to configure analog voice services:

·                            Configuring the ATA for analog.

o Syspine has a built-in ATA and the voice services are automatically configured (see how Module-1 (Prefix: 9) and Module-2 (Prefix: 9) appeared in Figure 2-6). To modify the analog voice service settings on a Syspine unit, simply select Edit Voice Service under Voice Services.

o D-Link and Aastra base units use external ATAs and you would need to complete the Add Voice Service procedure below for analog voice service. I complete the procedure below using an Aastra base unit.

·    Rollover pattern. Ask your provider to configure lines to roll over. If a caller calls the number on a line that happens to be busy, the call will roll over to an available line. Note that the rollover order should be the order in which you connect the phone lines to the port numbers. For example, rollover line 1 goes to P 1; rollover line 2 goes to P2; etc.

·    Caller ID. Response Point requires caller ID for a number of important functions to work correctly:

o To gain remote access to the system (for example, to check voicemail from your mobile phone).

o To display meaningful information on the incoming call notifications.

o To set certain callers to bypass the receptionist and be routed directly to a specified user.

Let’s complete the procedures to add phone service for both analog and VoIP.

1.   Click Add Phone Service and observe the Add Voice Service dialog box that has you select either analog or VoIP (Figure 2-17). Select Analog service that connects through a phone line adapter and click OK.

Figure 2-17

You will need to map separate passes for each type of voice service as the dialog box has radio button selections.

2.   The Configure Phone Service wizard starts on the Have you connected the phone line adapter? page. Select The phone line adapter is connected

and plugged in as seen in Figure 2-18. Select Next.

3.   The Through which adapter do you want to add analog service? page is displayed and the “hot” lines are shown under Phone line adapters found on the network. I am assuming you properly completed Step 2 immediately above.

FACTOID: If the adapter does not appear after you have arrived at this page and even hit Refresh, perhaps you are using a residential analog line. In Chapter 5 I discuss the need for a line splitter in a residential line environment, such as you might see in a home office.

4.   The Through which adapter do you want to add analog service page appears. Make your selection under Phone line adapters found on the network and click Next. See this selection in Figure 2-19.

Figure 2-19

In my example, I selected the Aastra ATA listed and clicked Next to proceed.

FACTOID: If no adapters appear in the page shown in Figure 2-19, make sure the ATA is functioning, the analog lines are plugged in and you are not using a Syspine unit (which automatically configures the analog voice service as I mentioned above).

5.     Configure the What are the properties of the analog services lines page shown in Figure 2-20.

Figure 2-20

This page is populated with sample information. You will use “real world” information here.

6.             Select your voice service prefix under Prefix on the Which prefix do you want to assign to analog service page as seen in Figure 2-21.

7.   Complete the Phone line adapter name field on the What do you want to name this adapter page and click Finish as shown in Figure 2-22.

Name the adapter with a distinctive name.

8.                The Configuring the voice service page appears and provide completion

information. Click Close. You have now configured the voice service using an external ATA.
